Harvest 2014 is complete

harvest 2014 is complete

Final harvest at vineyards in the hills of Dry Creek Valley

Harvest 2014 is complete and the results are tabulated

As of this day, the harvest 2014 has been completed throughout California. As far as yields, the 2014 harvest appears to be good, but not as high as the past two years. Quality is more important and most of the vintners I have spoken with say that it appears to be a wonderful harvest. No one, of course, knows for sure until the wine has been fermented, aged, and released in the bottle. If the 2014 holds up and meets quality expectations, it will mark three consecutive harvest seasons that have been very good to growers and winemakers.

In this photo we see the final days of the harvest 2014 in the hills of the Dry Creek Valley. Note the leaves are turning color on the vines. These are Syrah grapes and, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, usually the last variety of grapes to be ready for harvest.

Harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon on a rainy morning

On York Lane in St. Helena, harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon

Harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon on a rainy morning

On this September morning a light rain fell throughout the Napa Valley. It did not stop the harvest of this Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard near York Lane in St. Helena. A crew of ten workers roamed the rows of vineyards working swiftly and efficiently. I spoke with the crew chief, Carlos, and he told me that the light rain would not have any effect on the grapes. Carlos said the crew would work until mid morning and would finished harvesting half the vineyard. The second half of the vineyard will be picked on Friday. The vineyards belong to Dr.Madaiah Revana a cardiologist who practices in Houston, Texas. Additional information can be found on the Revana Family Vineyards Website.

Beautiful orchestration of the harvest on York Lane in St. Helena
