R+D Kitchen in Yountville

R & D Kitchen in Yountville

The R+D Kitchen in Yountville

R+D Kitchen in Yountville

The R+D Kitchen in Yountville was our lunch stop on Monday, October 19. We are visiting the Napa Valley for three days. The R+D Kitchen  is the newest addition of the three R+D  Kitchen restaurants operated by the Hillstone group. Hillstone also operates the ever popular Rutherford Grill just up the road from the R+D Kitchen in Yountville. The day was one of the most spectacular days in the Napa Valley. The temperature was moderate, but the large puffy white clouds made for a dramatic backdrop to the Valley. Unfortunately, the R+D Kitchen has a limited bar menu for outside patio dining. We decided inside would offer us a better fare for lunch. And indeed the lunch was delightful. Janelle had the Macho Salad, Gloria had the veggie club, and I had the special sandwich of the day: Swordfish with avocado crema and Baja slaw. Crazy delicious! The wine list is extensive and very reasonable. We shared a bottle of Frog’s Leap Chardonnay for $34. The service was excellent. The R+D Kitchen in Yountville is open for lunch and dinner, Monday-Thursday 11:30am-9:30pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-10:30pm, Sunday 11am-9:30pm.

Mustards Grill in Yountville – 31 years in wine country

July 18, 2015 by Joe Becerra

Mustards grill

The pulled pork sandwich with the Ooo-Eee  sauce

I last did a post on Mustards Grill in June of 2008 for their 25th anniversary.  I am overdue for an update on one of the oldest and most popular restaurants in the Napa Valley. Mustards Grill in Yountville has stood the test of time.  Now in its 31st year, it is as popular as ever. It is still owned and operated by the fabulous chef, Cindy Pawlcyn. We visited this past Wednesday for lunch. The place was jumping with wine country visitors and the locals, including some winemakers. Not much had changed at Mustards Grill since our previous visit.  The menu is still much the same and the food is as tasty as always.  The BBQ pork sandwich on the menu (pulled pork, slow cooked) is fantastic with the pork soaked in what Cindy calls her Ooo-Eee sauce. Wow, what flavors! That’s what I had for lunch and it was delicious. The daily fish tostada is another favorite. Crab cakes are also divine. One thing I like about Mustards Grill and Cindy’s other restaurant in the Napa Valley, Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen in St. Helena, is the wine list. The wine list is extensive with a generous focus on Napa Valley wines. Perhaps even better are the prices of the wine. Unlike many other Napa Valley restaurants, the markup on most of the wines is quite reasonable. Since our last visit, the Mustards Grill gardens have been upgraded to an extensive degree.  Planter boxes are filled with all types of veggies and herbs, bringing the freshest ingredients to the table. I love the Padron Pepper planter box that must have 50 plants with these small, scrumptious Spanish peppers.  A sign on the Padron planter box reads “Padron Peppers, Que Rico!” I own the Mustards Grill Cookbook and I can tell you from experience the Mustards cookbook is true to the food served at Mustards Grill. Some of my favorites in the book are Grilled Figs with Pancetta, Achiote-Marinated Chicken Breasts, and the BBQ Pork Sandwich pictured above. Visit the Mustards Grill Website for the restaurant hours of operation. Don’t miss it when you are traveling in the Napa Valley wine country.
