Land of Albariño

Albariño harvest in Rias Baixas, Spain

I shot this photo a few years ago at this exact time of the year. We were traveling throughout the wine country of Spain and luckily arrived in the Rias Baixas D.O. during harvest. The Rias Baixas is the land of Albariño. The woman in the photo is an Albariño grower and part of the cooperative of the Martin Codax winery. Martin Codax is located in Cambados, Spain, the center of all the Albariño activity. The woman is proudly showing us a typical cluster of the Albariño grape. She tells us that she has grown all her grapes organically. “No pesticides,” she excitedly tells us. All around Cambados we see harvest taking place and it is all the Albariño grape. As you can see from the photo below, the Albariño grapes are grown up on a trellis. This is because this area of Spain is near the Altantic Ocean and receives a great deal of moisture. The trellis system prevents grape rot.
