For the next few days we are exploring the Yolo County wine country. This is our first trip to this area in search of wineries and tasting rooms. Our first day in Yolo took us to the Clarksburg area.  In terms of wine, Clarksburg is famous for two reasons: Chenin Blanc and Bogle Vineyards.  Chenin Blanc grows perfectly in Clarksburg. The cooling breezes from the Delta and the nearby Sacramento River make it the ideal climate for Chenin Blanc. It is very reminiscent of the Loire Valley in France and the influence of the Loire River. Chenin Blanc is the key grape in the Vouvray region of the Loire Valley.  Many California wineries source fruit for their Chenin Blanc wines from Clarksburg.

Bogle Vineyards is by far and away the largest winery in the area. Bogle produces one million cases of wine a year and has 1500 vineyard acres in the Clarksburg area. The Bogle tasting room is located in a beauty of a location amidst many vineyards. The tasting room is very comfortable and there is a magnificent picnic area. Pack your lunch and make this your lunch stop. There is no tasting fee at Bogle, which is very pleasant indeed. You can taste six wines, whatever is on the tasting menu for the day. The Chenin Blanc and the Viognier were the best of the wines we tasted. We wished we had packed a picnic lunch, because there is absolutely nowhere nearby to buy anything resembling a picnic lunch or deli sandwich. The Bogle tasting room is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm during the week and 11 to 5 pm on the Saturday and Sunday.  We arrived at Bogle Vineyards from San Francisco area taking Highway 4 and then Highway 160, which runs along the levee of the Sacramento River. You can also get to the Clarksburg wine region from Sacramento.  Next post will be on the fascinating Old Sugar Mill.
