Now is the time to visit Burgundy

In October of 2014, we spent one week in Burgundy. We rented a home in the White Burgundy town of Puligny-Montrachet. Hire a guide to take you on vineyard drives and walks, and to taste Burgundy wines at small family-owned wineries. Read more on traveling in Burgundy.

Village of Saint Aubin in Burgundy

Village of Saint Aubin in Burgundy

As we mentioned in our previous Photos of the Day, we spent a week in Burgundy, renting a home in the village of Puligny Montrachet. Traveling up to the hillside vineyards we took Highway D113. The D113 is a beautiful country road that runs from Beaune to Santenay. Just behind the famed Grand Cru vineyards of Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet sits the village of Saint Aubin. It is situated in a small valley all its own. This is a view from another road that comes into D113, and it is a spectacular setting. It is said by many wine experts that Saint Aubin White Burgundies live in the shadow of the Grand Cru White Burgundies of the Montrachet villages. The Grand Cru wines of Montrachet are very expensive and the Saint Aubin wines are significantly less in price.  Check out this article in Decanter Magazine on the wines of Saint Aubin.

Discovering Burgundy, a week in Puligny Montrachet

A week in Puligny Montrachet

We are spending a week in Burgundy. We have rented a house surrounded by small vineyard plots in the village of Puligny Montrachet. We arrived on Saturday with temperatures in the low 70’s. All the grapes have been harvested and the vineyards are beginning to turn color. Learning the wine districts of Burgundy is complex compared to learning the AVA’s (wine appellations) of California and the U.S. Puligny Montrachet is in the wine district of Cote de Beaune. In turn, the Cote de Beaune is a compound region of the Cote de Or. The major grape in Puligny is Chardonnay, and the area is known for its White Burgundys.

The main city in Burgundy is Beaune and Puligny Montrachet is about 8 miles from Beaune.  Getting to Puligny Montrachet from Beaune is a spectacular drive with vineyards all around. We look forward to discovering the Burgundy wine region during the week.
