Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Bud Break 2016

Bud Break in St. Helena in the Napa Valley – Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Bud Break 2016

Drive along Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail from Napa to Calistoga and you can witness the dawn of a new cycle in the life of the vines. Cabernet Sauvignon is in the midst of bud break. Most of the vines have been pruned and dressed for this wonderful event in nature. Grape growers unite in the joy of celebrating a new year in the making of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The recent rains have also given the growers more to celebrate.  The question still remains:  What will mother nature provide the grower and winemaker this year from bud break to harvest?

Early spring vines

Early Spring vines on West Dry Creek Road

What a lovely view of early Spring vines in wine country. This photo was taken on the beautiful wine country backroad of West Dry Creek Road in Sonoma County. This is close to the end of West Dry Creek Road near Preston Vineyards and Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves. What we enjoy most about this time of the year is the beauty of the vines as they awaken and embark on another growing season. At this point, most of the rows have been plowed and there is a very clean look to the vineyards. The only vegetation are bud-break leaves and a smattering of wild poppy flowers.  On West Dry Creek Road, there are several small, family-owned wineries to visit. We love Preston for its cozy tasting room and organic farming. We also love the vegetable garden and the daily baked bread accompanied by their olive oil.  We enjoy a visit to the Hawley Winery up on Bradford Mountain. Hawley has a tasting room in nearby Healdsburg, but has tasting and tours by appointment at their wine cellars on West Dry Creek Road. Usually, winemaker John Hawley leads the tasting and tours. It is a most interesting location and the views area very special.

Bud Break

March 10, 2015 by Joe Becerra

bud break

Bud break reported in several California wine regions

We have an early bud break

With the warm weather days of January, February and March, this was not unexpected. We have reports of bud break in several wine regions of California. Bud break is usually three to four weeks later than this date. We have reports via Twitter of bud break in Russian River Valley, St. Helena, Calistoga, Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Spring Mountain and other wine regions. What does this mean for vintners? For starters, there is a greater risk of frost damage. The earlier the bud break, the greater the odds that there will be a few frosty nights in the coming weeks of March and early April. Mother Nature is in control of night time temperatures. An early bud break means an early bloom. High winds or rains could damage the fruit potential. If the unseasonably warm weather continues, it will be a shortened growing season. That means less hang time for the grape clusters and a different taste component to the wine. Time will tell, but for now we can expect to see continued bud break in all wine areas of California.  For wine growers and winemakers, bud break signals the start of a new growing season. Fasten your seat belts, this is going to be interesting!
