The wine country town of Healdsburg is best known for its many wine tasting rooms, boutique shops, exquisite restaurants, and luxury lodging. But suddenly, Healdsburg is becoming a mecca for the artist and the art lover. It’s the best of both worlds for the wine geek and the art lover. Combine both activities as you stroll the downtown area of Healdsburg around the Plaza. One of the most popular and certainly the most significant Gallery is the Paul Mahder Gallery. For as long as I can remember, the Quonset hut that now houses the Gallery was an antique store of sorts. There seemed to be more junk inside than authentic antiques. The Gallery opened in 2014 and is the most extensive art gallery in Northern California.
One of my favorite galleries is the Andy Katz Photography Studio, located upstairs on 322-A Healdsburg Avenue. Andy Katz has created many stunning photographs of the wine country.
Another gallery with a focus on wine is the Bob Johnson Studio. Bob is both a wine label artist and a wine cartoonist. You will be laughing for days after your visit to Johnson’s studio. Bob loves to poke fun at your typical wine snob. The studio also has works of other artists. Fun!
On display at the Hawley Wine Tasting Room are some of Dana Hawley’s impressionistic landscape paintings of Northern California wine country.
There are many more galleries in Healdsburg to keep a wine and art lover busy for several days. Each second Saturday of the month, there is the Healdsburg Art Walk.
