Halter Ranch in Paso Robles – new winery and tasting room set to open any day now

Halter Ranch Vineyards

Halter Ranch Vineyards began in the year 2000 when Hansjörg Wyss from Switzerland purchased 900 acres of the ranch. In 2005 the winery was established and the tasting room opened on Adelaida Road in Paso Robles. The vineyards have been a mecca for nearby wineries to purchase and make wine. Now it is Halter Ranch’s turn to use their grapes for making wine. In the photo above, we see the new winery and tasting room that is set to open very soon. Everything at Halter is state-of-the-art. It is a gravity-flow winery, and “green” is the operative word here. The tasting room is now just off the Adelaida backroad and that will remain as a picnic area and perhaps include a deli. Once the new facilities open, tourists will be directed up the hill to the grand tasting room, offering Halter wines and picture-perfect views. The vineyards are all sustainably farmed. There are 19 grape varietals planted. They have both Bordeaux-style and Rhone-style wines. They even offer a Spanish Tempranillo wine. The tasting fee is currently $10 and includes a tasting of five wines. All the wines we tasted were well made and very good. The Rhone Rosé is delicious and a great choice to bring with you to the picnic area. The wonderful attraction of the current picnic area is the old Victorian farmhouse built in 1885. Another plus for visitors is the chance to walk around the area to see the old farm buildings and the bridge that crosses the creek. The tasting room is open seven days a week, 11am to 5pm.   Tours of the cave and the new winery are offered, as is a jeep ride for an excursion of the vineyards. Wines by the glass are offered for a reasonable price. Pack a lunch and enjoy the beauty of this tranquil area of Paso Robles wine country. Other nearby wineries are on our Adelaida Road Wine Trail.
