About the historic To Kalon Vineyards

To Kalon Vineyards are the most highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the entire Napa Valley. In the photo above, taken in late June, Cabernet grapes have yet to undergo véraison (beginning of ripening). By August these grapes will be a beautiful deep purple color. The Robert Mondavi Winery owns 250 acres of the To Kalon Vineyards, most of which are Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The Cabernet grapes are used to produce the Mondavi Reserve Cabernet and Oakville Cabernet. There is a small percentage of To Kalon Cabernet grapes that go into the production of the Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the entry level Cab for Robert Mondavi. This wine will age gracefully because of the To Kalon grapes. A small portion of the Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyards is Sauvignon Blanc, used for the Robert Mondavi Reserve Fume Blanc. In 2005, the winery began a 10-year, $10 million program of replanting the vines to ensure the continued quality of the grapes. Vineyard grower Andy Beckstoffer owns 89 acres that he purchased in 1993 from Beaulieu Vineyards in what is perhaps one of the greatest coups in the Napa Valley in terms of vineyard acquisition. Andy sells his prized grapes to a handful of premium Napa Valley wineries. To Kalon Vineyards was originally planted in 1868.
